Ilmu dalam perspektif sejarah kemanusiaan mempunyai puncak kecemerlangan masing-masing, namun seperti kotak pandora yang terbuka, kecemerlangan itu sekaligus membawa malapetaka. Kimia merupakan kegemilangan ilmu yang pertama yang dimulai sebagai kegiatan pseudo ilmiah yang bertujuan mencari obat mujarab untuk hidup abadi dan rumus campuran kimia untuk mendapatkan emas.
